Hey Guys! Pastry here bringing you a post about the Dungeon Crawling
Game, Desktop Dungeons. This game is a rouge-like game, which you can
play if you got 5 or 10 minutes to spare. Desktop Dungeons is one of the
easiest to control games where all it requires you to do is click on
enemies or a place where you want to go. If the instructions are easy,
it must be an easy game? Right? HELL NO. Desktop Dungeons is all about
utilizing your resources and managing them well. If you don't you might
as well retire your current play through unless you can salvage it.
The point of the game is in a dungeon, you will encounter a variety of
monsters or creatures, that you must fight to level up. In order to beat
the game you must defeat the Level 10 boss at the end. Please note, the
more you play and complete the game, the more you unlock, including up
to 19 different classes and 7 races. You must achieve a certain
condition in order to unlock the next class or race.
There are also a variety of dungeons. These dungeons will differ
depending on which one you choose. For people who have just started
playing the game you will start with the normal dungeon containing 4
enemies, A Meat Man, a Goblin, a Warlock, and a Zombie. Each monster has
different stats. The Level 10 monster in each Dungeon, will be an
upgraded version of a dungeon monster you find in the dungeon. If you
found the Meat Man, Goblin, Warlock, and Zombie, you'll have a 1/4
chance of a Meat man, a 1/4 chacne of the Goblin, and so on.
Dungeons vary in difficulty for which class and race you took, and
depending on the dungeon you chose. For example, if you picked a priest
in a Crypt Challenge, it would be much easier than using another class
like Fighter just because the Priest does double damage to undead
monsters, which are the monsters which inhabit the crypt.
Obviously the game is not easy as it sounds, and well.... You're right!
It's incredibly hard to win a dungeon on your first try, as each dungeon
is random, and you never know if the dungeon will be easy or hard. An
example, is the Wizard. In a normal dungeon run, if you don't find the
fire ball spell, BURNDAYRAZ (Burn their ***) quickly enough, your wizard
run is most likely going to lose. Especially if it's blocked by a high
level monster.
In the Game, there are Glyphs, which are just spells. In each dungeon
there will be 5 glyphs. For the Wizard there are 6. You can hold up to 3
glyphs, and 4 for the wizard. You can convert the glyph, and depending
on your race, they'll convert to different effects. Remember! Always
pick the class that's best suited for your certain race. If you pick a
Berserker Elf, it would be terrible as a Berserker uses +2 Mana for each
glyph. An elf raises your mana for each glyph converted. Instead you
should pick something that raises your attack, in which the Human is the
perfect choice.
Also in the game are gods. They heavily influence each run, as a god
greatly improves your chances of winning a dungeon usually. Again, I
will use the crypt as an example. In this dungeon, as a physical
attacker, it will be incredibly hard for you, as 1/3 of the monsters
sport a physical resistance, and the boss has immense physical
resistance. The God Taurog however is one of the best choices as a
physical attacker, and you may be able to take it on once you get the
boon or upgrade of Penetration. This sets all monsters physical
resistance to zero. This allows a much easier run of the crypt, as you
don't have to worry about physical resistance. However. Each god has a
downside if your piety, or points that allow you to get god;'s boons, go
below zero. The one god that is impossible for this is the Pactmaker,
and he is an all around god, that can adapt to any situation. However,
Jehora Jeheyu or Dracul gives severe consequences. That consequence is
death. So remember. Pick a god that appeals to your certain class, and
make sure your piety never goes below zero.
During this blog I'll be doing a playthrough of the normal dungeons with
each character and all the dungeons. I'll make one or two everyday, and
I'll show how to manage your resources, and learn some tips, such as
level catapulting. HERE ARE A FEW BASIC THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
1. Always try to fight the highest level monster you would be able to
kill. This will require some quick amount of math, and learning if you
have enough resources at hand. If you don't try to find some low or
equal level monsters to level up. This is known as the Level Catapult
strategy. Fighting a higher level monster than your level, will award
bonus experience, which might result in a level up, by only fighting
only one monster!
2. Your Dungeon Tiles are your most valuable resources. However it is a
limited resource, and soon enough you'll run out. By Level 7-10 you
should've explored all or most of the tiles.
3. Note that Potions are an invaluable resource against bosses and
monsters. However, you should try not to use potions in the beginning or
fighting regular monsters if you can. You want to save your potions for
bosses, or you'll lose if your not strong enough. One Potion could make
your run a win or lose.
4. Remember that monsters also regenerate as you do, but sometimes,
utilizing your tiles carefully, it may benefit you more than the
monster.
5. Level Up are also a huge resource you must consider. A Level up heals
all your Mana, Health, and bad ailments, such as poison. Serpents or
Wraiths are great monsters to level up against, as the poison made by
the former and the mana burn made by the latter will be healed once you
level up.
6. First Strike is a useful glyph which allows you to finish off an
enemy without it retaliating if it was equal or higher level. A monster
with first strike will still hit you.
7. Fireballs are one of your best spells throughout the game. They allow
you to soften up enemies so you can take them on, and also allow you to
deal damage without retaliation. They are a great tool to make use of
to employ the level catapult strategy.
8. If a run goes bad and you know you can't win, make sure you get the
gold, as it will carry on to your next run through the dungeons.
9. Shops are one of your greatest assets sometimes. Sometimes a shop
will make a situation that went bad, make it winnable again. For
example. In the crypt, there is a boss which has huge physical
resistance. He only takes 40% of your damage. However, if you run across
an item in the shop known as the flaming sword, it turns your physical
damage into magical, allowing you to take on the boss.
10. The First win is always the easiest, as the monsters will only have
80% of what they're suppose to have. On the second win and anymore, they
will have 100% of their stats.
These are my basics for each game, and remember to utilize your
resources! Math is also needed for a successful run, as if you don't
calculate damage correctly, your bound to run into trouble.
